Garbage, Recycling & Composting

Garbage and Food Waste Collection
Residential garbage and household food waste is collected once per week by the Town’s contracted collection company, Waste Management. These two waste streams are collected in separate containers that are emptied by a truck using automated arms. Each household is supplied with one gray container for garbage and one green container for household food waste by Waste Management.

Each household is allowed to put out a maximum of 40 kg per container per week. Extra Bag Decals are available at the Town Hall if you have garbage or food waste in excess of the allowable weekly amount. For more information on collection regulations, please click here.

To find out what day of the week garbage and food waste is collected on your street, check the waste collection Calendar and Map, and Schedule.

Collection regulations that residents are to follow are detailed in Town of View Royal Bylaw No. 745. To view this Bylaw, click here.

Please note that BPI Certified compostable bags are required for your household food waste. They must meet ASTM D6400-9 Standard Specifications for Compostable Plastics. These bags can be purchased at various retail outlets such as View Royal Food Market, Thrifty Foods, Home Depot, Lee Valley, and Walmart.

Plastic containers that can store your household food waste during the week inside your home, such as under your kitchen sink, can be purchased at the Town Hall.

Please contact Waste Management directly at (250) 652-6242 if your garbage or food waste has not been collected on any given week.

Households with secondary suites are allowed one supplied container for garbage and one supplied container for food waste for the main residence. The owner of the property pays for one annual user fee for this collection service; a second set of containers is not supplied for the suite. Extra garbage and/or food waste generated by the secondary suite can be put in the containers for the main residence, as long as the waste is within the allowable weekly amount. If not, Extra Bag Decals must be adhered to each extra container or bag.

Residents who live in condominium buildings and housing co-ops are not able to participate in the household food waste collection program. Waste Management is unable to supply these types of residences with the separate outdoor individual containers due to logistics and lack of space. Also, Town garbage and food waste collection is combined into one price for taxes, so each home on the Town service gets charged one user fee. We are unable to administer a separate cost for those residents in condo/co-op buildings if the resident were to only receive the food waste collection. However, there are private companies who provide this service:

  • Community Composting – Collects green kitchen scraps only
  • reFUSE – Collects all organics material (household organics, commercial, soiled paper, yard and garden waste, etc.)

You can check out the Capital Regional District’s (CRD) website for more info at: http://www.crd.bc.ca/waste/recycle/directory/default.aspx?filterBy=product&id=141&desc=Food%20Waste%20(Organics)

Recycling

The Capital Regional District (CRD) operates a “blue box” recycling program. Curbside recycling is offered to all residents through the CRD Environmental Services Branch. For information about the program such as recycling schedules and recyclable materials, please contact the CRD at (250) 360-3030 or online at www.crd.bc.ca. Blue boxes and bags can be purchased at the Town Hall.

For a list of facilities that will take your metals, batteries, white goods and other recyclable refuse, please click here.

Composting

The Canteen Composting Facility at 605 Canteen Road in Esquimalt is available to View Royal residents free of charge at the gate. The facility is open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information, please call the facility at (250) 386-3343, drop into the Town Hall for a brochure, or click here.

Lawn and garden waste is also collected three times per year on Saturdays at the curbside. See the coloured leaves on the collection Calendar and Map for your Saturdays. For more information regarding lawn and garden waste collection regulations, please click here.
